Faster processing at the Social Security Tribunal

When you have an appeal, waiting for a hearing and an answer from the Tribunal can cause a lot of stress. That’s why we keep working to make the appeal process simpler, easier and faster. In 2018-19, the average processing time for Employment Insurance appeals at the General Division was 142 days. By December 2019, we brought the processing time down to 46 days. On average, we sent our decisions out less than two weeks after the hearing.

And we know we can still go further, while still making quality decisions.

We made a lot of progress with Income Security appeals at the General Division too. The average processing time in 2018-19 was 107 days, from the time the appeal is ready to proceed to the time we sent out a decision. We brought that down to 75 days in December 2019.

The number of appeals waiting to be heard at the General Division is also shrinking. That means appellants don’t have to wait as long to get a date for a hearing.

We’ve achieved these improvements by using better case management methods and focusing on access to justice. You can read more about the work we’re doing in our 2019 Progress Report.

We will continue to implement meaningful and lasting changes that help appellants get an answer that is simple, quick and fair.
